Growing Food - This Thursday...

Believe it or not, it's time to start seriously thinking about your 2012 vegetable garden. Wither you start your own seedlings or buy starts, pull out your gardening books and use this time to create a detailed
plan. Recently Prince C. and I spent time picking out seeds at Gardeners Supply and drew up this years layout. Changing some plant varieties every year keeps gardening interesting. New additions are French pumpkins, Romanesco cauliflower, Early Girl tomatoes, and a new radicchio.

Reducing our use of plastic is on our minds and gardening seems to have tons of it. To help eliminate some of the plastic in gardening we invested in the blocking system called "blockers". Eliot Colman goes into great detail on how this is done in his book The New Organic Grower. Vermont Compost Company makes a nice soil blocking product called "Fort Vee" or you can make it yourself using Eliot Coleman's recipe. I'm excited to be using the blocking method! Already, parsley, basil, and kale have been planted. Getting my hands back into the soil and creating a vision for this years growing season feels wonderful.

This Thursday I will give a soil blocking demonstration and discuss growing food at home.
