With scares of food supplies being unhealthy and healthy clean food in short supply, I am taking my vegetable gardening to a new level. First off, Prince Charming built a 4 by 4 raised bed to start the season early this year.
The bed is lined with 20 year weed cloth and filled with equal parts of peat moss, compost, and vermiculite. A wood grid has it neatly divided into 1 foot squares. To keep the seedlings warm the bed has 10ft 1/2 inch PVC looped in it like a tent (from one corner to the other) and covered with a large sheet of plastic we saved from our new king mattress. Hemlock was our wood of choice, measuring 1 3/4 inches thick. Once completed we added hot watered, which we poured through a colander because my water cans were still put away from last summer. So then I planted spinach, arugula, and three types of lettuce. The day after we planted it snowed 24 inches. Yikes, but have no fear and fast forward to March 27th, all the seeds have sprouted and they are growing fast!
Inside the house it looks like a garden nursery. Lettuce, tomato, and tons of crusiferours vegetables are growing under new grow lights. Are you motivated yet?
